Playing in just his second game with Lehigh Valley, former Phillies third baseman Maikel Franco was hit by a pitch on his left hand Friday night. He left the game for a pinch-runner and was out of the lineup Saturday before being placed on the IL Sunday with a left hand contusion. Lefty Josh Tols (bruised ankle) was activated from the IL, taking Franco’s roster spot.
The injury is another blow to Franco, who is trying to fight his way back to the majors after being optioned out by the Phillies last week. With the Phillies this season, Franco had hit 15-47-.231/.296/.405 in 102 games. The Phillies inserted Scott Kingery into the third base spot that Franco had held with the Phillies since 2015.
Franco will be eligible to return to the active roster on August 20th shortly after Lehigh Valley returns home for their final homestand of the season. It’s possible that he will be recalled by the Phillies when major league rosters expand in September, but Franco told reporters that the Phillies had not given him any guarantee that he would return for the final month of the season.
