The Lakewood BlueClaws aren’t doing very well at sharing weekly league honors. Last week, Jhailyn Ortiz was the South Atlantic League Player of the Week and this week, left-hander David Parkinson was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week. He was also named the BlueClaws Player of the Week after throwing seven shutout innings in the Sunday win over Hickory that helped propel the BlueClaws into the post-season.
Parkinson was also the SAL Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 27th. Will Stewart won for the week ending June 3rd, so the BlueClaws have won three of the last four SAL Pitchers of the Week in addition to Ortiz grabbing the Player of the Week honors last week.
With his Sunday outing, Parkinson lowered his ERA to a league-best 1.07 and has not allowed an earned run since May 14th, a span of 33 consecutive innings.
The left-hander from Ole Miss threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, and striking out a career-high 11 in the win over Hickory. Coupled with Kannapolis’ loss to Greensboro on Sunday night, the BlueClaws clinched a playoff spot for the fifth time in the history of the franchise.
