Of the four full-season teams in the Phillies organization, three of them are in the playoffs. In addition to that, the Phillies GCL East team also qualified for the Gulf Coast League playoffs.
The GCL East squad qualified for the Gulf Coast League playoffs but were eliminated in a one-game semifinal against the GCL Cardinals last week. The Cardinals then lost to the Tigers GCL affiliate in the finals.
Clearwater opened the Florida State League playoffs with a 7-6 win over the Daytona Tortugas on Tuesday. Grenny Cumana laced a solo home run down the third base line in the bottom of the eighth to put the Threshers ahead. Addison Russ gave up a run in the top of the eighth and then threw a perfect ninth inning to pick up the win.
Game one of the series was in Clearwater with game two – and three, if necessary – in Daytona on Wednesday and Thursday. Alejandro Requena (4-4, 3.60) gets the start in game two against Scott Moss (15-4, 3.68).
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs open their best-of-five series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders tonight at PNC Field in Moosic, PA. The two teams have met in the first round of the IL playoffs each of the past two seasons. In 2016, the RailRiders swept the IronPigs and last season, Lehigh Valley won the first game of the series and then dropped the next three.
Enyel De Los Santos (10-5, 2.63) will be opposed by Erik Swanson (3-2, 3.86) for Scranton. Cole Irvin (14-4, 2.57) will start game two on Thursday. The series shifts to Lehigh Valley for game three – and four and five, if necessary – on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The Lakewood BlueClaws won both halves of the South Atlantic League season and will face the Kannapolis Intimidators in the first round of the SAL playoffs, which also begin tonight. Andrew Brown (6-3, 2.10) will start game one for the ‘Claws with Spencer Howard (9-3, 3.78) going in game two. Should the series go to a full three games, Damon Jones (10-7, 3.41) will start the deciding game.
Should the BlueClaws make it to the SAL Championship, they will face either Rome or Lexington.
